Back in 2004, I went to the theater to see “A Cinderella Story” because of Jennifer Coolidge and also became a fan of the movie’s star, Hilary Duff. I fell even more in love with Hilary during her seven-year run on the TV show “Younger.”
Hilary isn’t just an actress, but also a singer. I’m a bad gay because that only just became news to me, but most gays have known this since the early 2000’s. In my head, her new album, Luck…Or Something, was her debut but it’s actually her sixth album.
Here’s a quick rundown of what I’ve been missing all these years:
“Metamorphosis” and “Hilary Duff” were her first two albums that came out in the early 2000’s when Hilary was in her breakout TV role as Lizzie McGuire. These albums have a very Disney-Diva-Gone-Wild feel. There’s an over-produced 90’s angst vibe to them with a hard rocking edge. Think Avril Lavigne as a Musketeer.
2007’s “Dignity” showcases Hilary’s new-found voice. It’s more cohesive with a unique pop sound. Then, after an eight year hiatus, Hilary returned with a little boogie in her pop step, going slightly dance with “Breathe In. Breathe Out.”
Hilary was prolific over her decades in the music business. On top of her four studio albums, she put out a Christmas and two greatest hits albums. Which brings us to 2026, where I saw autographed copies of Luck…Or Something online and had to own one.
Luck…Or Something is Hilary’s best album to date, in my gay opinion, sounding like what I think a Hilary Duff album should sound like. It’s a smooth piece of pop art. This album is full of feel-good balladry with a little shimmy, her lyrics have always been about positivity and fun but her vocals, sound and content have grown and matured.
My mind is blown. Not only is Hilary a singer but a massively popular one. Popular enough to embark on her Lucky Me world tour and sold out a two-night stop at Madison Square Garden which could’ve been worth a trip, until I saw that scalped nosebleed seats are $300. Damn girl, you get that paycheck! That’s beyond Luck…Or Something.
