Nxdia’s last EP, in the flesh, was very sultry and smooth but their new album, I Promise No One’s Watching, is much harder and gritty. This album is a full-on indie-rock album. It’s not the album I was expecting but the album I didn’t realize I was missing.
In my gay opinion, Nxdia has a unique sound but they’re serving a little Billie Eilish vibe on “Boy Clothes” and “Puppet” but with a jagged edge. In the 80’s, New Wave music took the sound of the day, synthed it up and took music to a new level. “More” and “Boo, Nevermind” have a modern New Wave feel, taking today’s sound and modernizing it with a 90’s kiss. Imagine if Bow Wow Wow and The Red Hot Chili Peppers had a love child.
Nxdia’s lyrics are just as personal and real and their previous EP but this album plays a bit more with gender and sexual fluidity. This album is relatable no matter where on the spectrum you fall. It is a perfect album for Pride month.
I Promise No One’s Watching has me moshing around my living room…much to the dismay of my cats. Have you seen a cat roll it’s eyes, I have now. Nxdia might Promise No One’s Watching but sometimes someone is and now my cats have something to talk about in therapy. Until then, I’ll keep shimmying until PETA shows up on my doorstep.
