The thing with being a Tori Amos fan is you know with each album comes a new concept. Instead of pretending like I can gaysplain the story behind Tori’s newest album, In Times Of Dragons, best to let Tori explain it, in only the way Tori can.
Tori’s concepts and explanations are uniquely her own, so is her sound. Tori’s albums are always piano forward with poetic lyrics and In Times Of Dragons is no different. These seventeen songs (not often an album has so many tracks) continue Tori’s current darker sound but with some familiar traits. “Shush” revisits the woman she used to be with her tongue firmly planted in cheek, Tori’s religious upbringing shines on “St. Teresa” and “Fanny Faudrey” has a show-tune vibe that only a handful of her quirkier ditties pull off.
Tori has always been political and topical with a strong message of female empowerment. In my gay opinion, In Times Of Dragons is her strongest feminist piece of art to date. Which is so important now, with people trying to silence women’s voices.
