Wednesday Eve Plumb came to the First Congregational Church in Madison, Connecticut thanks to my favorite indie bookstore, RJ Julia Booksellers, to sign and discuss her autobiography “Happiness Included.” How could I not want to go see “The Brady Bunch’s” Jan Brady speak in person. You know Eve must be a big deal to get me to go to church.
In my gay opinion, Eve is a strong woman who never let celebrity rule her, kept a level head thanks to her parents and didn’t rely on a man at a time when women couldn’t have a credit card without a husband’s consent. She’s very forthcoming but never dishes any dirt, even when it comes to some of the skeevier men who tried getting inappropriately close to the young actress. She’s also funny throughout, especially when talking about the talent that the Brady kids lacked on their albums and tours.
“Happiness Included” gives an insiders look into life as a 60’s child star. Best of all, Eve writes about the pets and rescues that enhanced her life throughout the years; her sweet appreciation brought me to tears. I was also brought to tears of laughter with some of the pics of Eve with her body doubles, who were adult little men in pigtails and dresses. The queens on Rupaul’s Drag Race need not worry.
“Happiness Included” is a fun read for classic TV buffs, historians of the entertainment industry or fans like me who grew up on “The Brady Bunch.”
