Over the past few years, there’s been a lot of talk about AI in the music industry. However, what if it’s been around longer and is just letting itself be known now?
Picture it, the late 1990’s, a young diva is just coming off a popular soap opera (Neighbours) and taking the world by storm with her first single, “Torn.” She’s so huge, she catches the attention of the newly developing AI. It tracks her over the years, training itself on her half a dozen albums, countless singles and television appearances. Until finally, with the recent discovery of it’s existence and societal distrust, AI decides to make it’s move and take over the persona of the well-liked, Natalie Imbruglia.
In my gay opinion, that’s the only way to explain Natalie’s new indie album Algorithm. Thirty years later and Natalie hasn’t aged and neither has her voice, the only thing that’s changed is her style. Algorithm is a very electronic and futuristic, feel-good album with random psychedelic lyrics over synth-pop beats that are uniquely her own. It’s the unexpected musical departure I didn’t realize I was missing.
On “Algorithm,” Natalie (or is it AI) sings “I am the future” but I’m not so sure 90’s Natalie ever saw this future coming or AI could’ve predicted it. So get ready because Natalie’s Algorithm is looking to take over the world and it just might.
